U&lc: Influencing Design and Typography

Upper and Lowercase was a magazine for graphic designers that had a strong emphasis on typography that ran from 1973 to 1999. It was one of the most dominant graphic design magazines of its time and not only showcased new type releases from ITC and was a way of life and influence for those that lived and breathed graphic design.

U&lc: Influencing Design and Typography is a showcase of some of the magazines best covers, illustrations, and stories that it published over the years. The goal of the book is show the use of type and image working with one another and to inspire designers and designers for generations to come that type and images can and do work together when used properly.

U&lc was known for having a different designer every issue, so there is variety of styles and methods used in the design the layout of the magazine, so it is definitely a good reference to see a ton of different layouts and type combinations, that is sure to keep you turning page after page.

The book shows some of the best examples from professionals using both serifs and sans serifs (new and old) in all their magnificent type glory! I would love to try and incorporate some of the older design aesthetics as well as some of the oddities that appear in the book in my future projects. It is definitely something worth taking a look at, especially if you are coming down with designer's block.
