CMYK vol. 54 - Rachel Waddill
CMYK Magazine choice of typeface is perfect for them. It is very clean and easy to read, from the little blurbs that tell you the artist of the work they are featuring to the full articles on various subjects. My favorite, however, was the table of contents. It has a vintage feel from the color scheme they selected to the use of hand drawn type. It is incredibly effective because the table of contents is usually incredibly boring to look at. More often than not, it's just a list of the articles with the page number next to it. CMYK takes it a step further with changing the style of font from article to article. The other awesome thing that they did was add a second table of contents to this magazine after the Pro Showcase for their Featured Articles. While this table of contents is consistent in color, it still utilizes the hand written type like the original did. It is also followed by giving the same treatment to the article with the Facebook poll. Polls and quotes that are being displayed are sometimes in a boring format, this adds intrigue. They also are able to highlight the most important word or short phrase from each quote.
A way to utilize this for my personal use is to remember that the normally boring things don't have to be boring. You can have fun with it, which also makes it more interesting and grabs the readers/viewers attention.
