Introduction to Typography

Upon first glance at the (paperback) cover, it has great type hierarchy until you notice the rather tacky blue border with “A PELICAN BOOK” printed on all four sides. In my opinion, once is enough. I’m not sure what the decorative curly-Q design has anything to do with type either. Inside, the book is set kind of like a vintage chapter book. There are chapter titles, subheaders, and the beginning of each chapter, the first few words are in small caps. It contains no images, but it does have type setting examples. Not exactly the most visually appealing book but its type hierarchy makes it easy to read and follow and is straightforward. This book covers the rules of composition, to choosing and setting typefaces, to typesetting pages, illustrations and books. And this is all pre-technology age, so no talk of computers or InDesign. This book is a great reference for type I or artc2303 if you ever forget basic guidelines or need to organize type in a efficient manner. It basically covers everything we all learned in type 1, prior to the computer age.
