Communication Arts Typography Annual 3 - Sylvia Dang

Communication Arts' Typography Annual showcases the best typography of the year. They feature entries from categories such as posters, ads, identity, packaging, digital media, and typeface design. I chose the table of contents to use as my example for good type because of how well they organized their issue. First off, I loved that they actually put the table of contents on the second page of the magazine where you see it immediately. The layout is very neat, I can tell the content is aligned with a grid. The header contains the logo and "Communication Arts" in a bright pink with the issue label above it, at the upper right corner. Next they have images of their featured content with the corresponding page numbers beside them. "Features" is the first sub-header, set in a narrow geometric sans-serif font. The page numbers and text are set at a smaller size and different typeface to create hierarchy and distinguishes it from the sub-header. The title of the pages are bolded to also help the reader distinguish the title from the text. To the right of the features is where the typography annual starts and lists all the categories and their page numbers, keeping the same easy to follow layout. I think this is a great example of type hierarchy and easy reader experience. The text is set in a visually appealing way that makes sense to the reader immediately and that's very convenient for a page whom readers expect to find information fast and easily.
