Catalog - Julio Barrientos

For the books I chose I decided to look for books of my top favorite/inspirational artist. My top 3 are Alphonse Mucha, Egon Schiele, and James Jean. All the books I found were roughly about 12x9 in size.

Alphonse Much, this book contains various works by the artist, from posters, drawings, paintings and furniture/jewelry design. The book uses a sans-serif font throughout that has an art nouveau feel to it. The layout is very balanced and symmetrical on the spreads. I enjoyed the full page detailed images that started each new section within the book. Also the use of black pages at times to show works was a nice break from the continuous white.

Egon Schiele 1890-1918 The Midnight Soul of the Artist, a great book that contains a lot of Schiele's works. The book uses a mix of san-serif and serif fonts, for the body text the book uses the san serif and for headers and titles the serif is introduced. The layout is very balanced in this book, each page compliments its other with either an image of the same size or text that mimics the size of the image. The layout is also very clean very simple, there is a lot of white space left, which in turn helps the image not become too overwhelming.

James Jean Rebus, this book contained lots of different works by James Jean and tended to be more image based compared to the first two books I listed. When test is used it's very minimal  with lots of line-height added, in the color grey and sans-serif. The text also mimics whatever image is with it. Throughout the book they kept with the color scheme that mimics the works of the artist and compliments the works. I enjoyed the spreads where they show his process and compliment his final piece with his sketch, the sketch is presented smaller centered on its own page. Another design aspect I enjoyed was the two page spread containing one image aligned left to allow a bit more white space on the right.
