I Chose the Metropolitan Museum of Art to talk about because it is one of my favorite museums I've ever visited. The amount of things to be seen and the wide variety of collections makes it a place anyone would enjoy going. The two exhibitions I chose to feature are Impressionism, Fashion, and Modernity and African Art, New York, and the Avant-Garde. I chose these for the typefaces used in the exhibition and the interesting topics.
Impressionism, Fashion, and Modernity analyzes the presence of fashion in Impressionistic paintings. The use of a modern typeface (may be didot or bodoni) was a good choice because of the name and the fashion focus of the exhibition. This exhibition focuses on the peak fashion coming to Paris and the development of department stores making fashion available to everyone.
African art, New York, and the Avant-Garde is a collection of African art that belonged to the patrons of the New York avant-garde during the 1910's and 1920's. I feel like this is an extremely unique exhibition and would have really influenced the art of the time. The typeface chosen for the exhibition is really interesting. With a tall x height and very rounded serifs the typeface has both an art deco feel and a hand rendered to connect with the African art.
Both these exhibitions are unique and chose very appropriate typefaces for their topic. I think these are great examples to use to help with our exhibition to see type used to connect with the history of an exhibition.
