Art Deco Chic Exhibition - Lindsey Laibinis

The exhibition I will be talking about is called Art Deco Chic: Extravagant Glamour Betweetn the Wars which is found at the Museum of Vancouver. The design style known as art deco began in Paris in the 1920s and quickly gained worldwide popularity. In Art Deco Chic, visitors can take in 66 gorgeous garments from the era. Art Deco was a distinct departure from previous design styles, drawing inspiration from geometric shapes to evoke elegance and modernity. It was also influenced by an increased ability to travel world wide – bringing inspiration not only from modernism, but from faraway places such as Russia, Egypt, and Mexico. Many items on show are exquisite designer dresses with labels such as Chanel, Lanvin, Vionnet, Patou, and Schiaparelli.

The garments and accessories on display come from the private collections of Ivan Sayers and Claus Jahnke, as well as from the Museum of Vancouver and other collections. Handbags, hats, shoes, and jewelry will further illustrate the use of geometric shapes to create sleek, sophisticated designs. The website that I will be getting some of my pictures is called Inside Vancouver which is a multi-author blog written by people from Vancouver talking about all things Vancouver. Click here to go to their website and view the direct blog about this exhibition.

The typography of the exhibition title itself  'Art Deco Chic' looks very geometric. The 'Glamorous Fashions of the 1920s and 1930s' typeface looks possibly like a Geometric Sans Serif typeface. It's very light/thin, dainty, and a bit curly. These typefaces are perfect for what this exhibition is about. The Geometric typeface really communicates the Art Deco movement, and the Geometric Sans Serif typeface with it's 'curliness' and it's light strokes definitely shows the fashion/chic part of the exhibition.

You can definitely get a feeling of sophistication, modernity, chic, and fashion forward just by looking at the layout of the entire exhibition. Everything is very clean, geometric, and in black and white. I think by choosing all these elements you really get a feel of exactly what this exhibition is all about: fashion.

This museum exhibition is a must see for any fashion lovers out there. I also think it would be beneficial to really anyone as well, because it's a museum covering a really interesting topic, which I think anyone should have the least bit of interest in checking out :)

For this exhibition catalog project we're currently working on, doing this blog post really helped me get inspired by some great ideas. Particularly this one for it's bold statement, clean and crisp layout, and simple color palette. I absolutely loved how clean this exhibition is. I hope for mine, even though I'm doing a playful subject (The Legend of Zelda) I hope I can incorporate playfulness in a clean and simple way. I think I will be more aware to make my exhibition catalog clean and bold with not too much commotion that will overwhelm the reader.
